My name is Ruth Derks and I am a Breast Cancer Survivor! I have been married for 40 years this May to my best friend Gerry and I am a mother of three great children, Sarah and her husband John, Rachel and her husband Steve and Luke and his long-time Partner, Sherri. I am a Bookkeeper at Crooked Creek Acres and I LOVE to RUN!

Words cannot describe the feeling I had when Theresa asked me to be part of the 2020 ONERUN Team. Truly an honour!

I first met Theresa at the GoodLife Club in Strathroy in 2011. Theresa was there promoting ONERUN at the local radio station. At that time, I was training a running group for GoodLife. Our goal was to run 100km – not in one day of course but to run 100km within 8 weeks and run our last km together with Theresa as she ran through Strathroy. Our group did achieve that goal with Theresa on that very special day in June.

The day that changed my life… I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer on May 7th, 2013. I told the radiologist that I just couldn’t have this. No way. My daughter Sarah was getting married in 3 weeks and I have to run the NYC Marathon in November. I asked him… do you think I can achieve this by then??  He asked me if I heard of Theresa Carriere?  “She is a breast cancer survivor and she ran 100km in 1 day!!”  I told him that I DID know that remarkable brave woman!!

Since the time I was diagnosed with breast cancer I have had 3 surgeries, have run multiple marathons… and I DID RUN NYC Marathon that November of 2013 – 4 months after my double mastectomy.

My inspiration, my strength and my determination came from my dear friend Theresa Carriere. XO
